Most types of businesses have categories which are assessed based on each $100.00 of Estimated
Assessable Payroll. Payments are made on this estimate and are revised at the end of each year.
Penalties are imposed for low assessments. If your business does not require mandatory coverage you
may opt for Voluntary Coverage. Benefits paid are based on the level of desired coverage applied for
in the case of business owners; therefore, it is advisable to obtain the maximum allowable. FREE
payroll books are available when your account is opened.Note Coverage is optional for Corporate Directors.
To be covered Directors must request coverage for a specific amount.There is a maximum
& minimum amount of coverage allowed & payouts require specific conditions to be met.

An employer remittance account can be opened by telephone and fax. Call and you will get specific instructions.
You should have the following information available before you start:
- - Articles of Incorporation
- - Date business originated
- - Date first employees hired
- - Estimated number of employees
- - Name and address of your bank
- - Social Insurance Numbers and names of ALL partners or directors
A complete kit containing all forms and deduction booklets will be sent to you. Remember to get your
account number (Business Information Number "BIN") while on the phone.
EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE

Calling this number will put you in touch with the closest of four Edmonton locations. Since E.I.
payments are remitted with source deductions there should not be much contact with this department;
however, when employees leave, a Record of Employment (ROI), (INS-2106) must be completed. These are
obtained by calling EI and quoting your Remittance Account Number. (see Payroll Deductions - above).
ALBERTA HEALTH CARE
Participation by businesses with five or more eligible employees is mandatory. Call and leave your
name and representative will visit you (in Edmonton). There is no advantage to participating if not
required since the rates for voluntary participation are the same and the remittance becomes the
responsibility of the employer.
